English as a Second Language Classes

We are providing intensive English as a Second Language (ESL) classes and conversation classes for our newly arrived Afghan neighbors living in Alexandria, VA.

The ESL classes in Alexandria City need lots of support!  The daytime classes at the William Ramsey Rec Center are meeting a huge need in the community and continue to look for English speaking volunteers to help assist or substitute as teacher occasionally (there is some compensation for this).  ESL classes for Middle and High School students meet at the Ramsey Rec Center on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays (daytime).   Please see the sign-up sheet for the daytime and evening classes .

Afghan families are still arriving to the DMV area daily and continue to need furniture, household items, clothing, etc.  Rental assistance can be donated through or contact If you have furniture you would like to donate, contact  The Lutheran Social Services Resource Center  in Alexandria accepts donations of gently used or new clothing for adults and children, diapers, formula, sheets, towels, and other household items to provide to new families.  Access the full list of items and donation information here.   An easy way to donate is  through an Amazon Wish List.
